Infancide Target Audience

Our film is targeted at both genders as it will have not only action and violence but also an emotional plot that the main detective has to overcome. Our films targeted at Men and women aged from 18 and over. if it was leaning over to eaither sex it would be male as thriller films just have every aspect that a man looks for in a film such as action, tension and psychological plots.

Problems we came up against whilst filming parity

When filming our parity we came up against 3 problems.

1- the first problem we came up against was how busy the goals mens toilets were, this was a problem as georgina had to keep leaving the toilets everytime a man came by. Due to this we had to take quite a few breaks from filming so the overall filming time was longer

2- The second Problem we had was the tripod and how it cannot pan around the room you can only do still shots with it and in the parity we were remaking this was no good, we had to film the whole sequemce handheld.

3- Our third problem was when filming we held the camera portrait angle for some shots, but for the most of them we held it landscape. When we got back to edit our work some of the shots were rotated on their side due to how we had held the camera and this was a problem because we didnt know how to rotate them back, we watched a few tutorials on youtube and then understand how to do it.

Infantcide Detective Costume Research

I have been looking at what we should make our detective wear, I was looking at the detectives in shutter island and the trench coats that they wear, along with the scruffy shirt and tie showing that its a hard job. this picture is a perfect example of what i would like our detective to look like.

Our detective has had a hard life so he needs to look very run down, we are also going to have him to waking up to the phone ringing and you will see the state of his room showing empty fast food boxes and empty bottles of alcohol to show he is an alcoholic and not a stereotypical well presented and professional detective.

We have a black suit available to wear underneath the black trench coat. i have a black trench coat that i just have in my wardrobe and georginas dad has a black suit.

For the Little boy that the detective sees in the mirror we are going to have him wearing pyjamas as this signifies innocence and then the fact that they will be bloodstained will tell the audience that this child was murdered brutally. we might even have the child holding a teddy bear to add more innocence.

Georginas Little brother has pyjamas so we have them available along with the teddy bear.

Remake of 'Parity' (Other student's work)

This is the video that we did shot by shot remake for;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5BIXi-cVLM&feature=related

Georgina's thoughts on the remake video of student's work

We have remade a opening sequence of other student's work, we have posted the location that we shot this short video in as they best represented the same toilets that the student's used in there video. I think our video works well, we chose an actor to play the main role in this scene so that our video would be more realistic and the emotion and tension in the scene would be more understanding to the audience as you can see it on the actors face.
 From making this opening sequence we have worked out that it is not as affective recording from two angles, e.g rotating the camera to create the shot because when it goes into final cut it is difficult to rotate the clip also to the audience the frame looks out of place. This did mean that we learnt some more skills on final cut, as we had to watch some helpful skills videos on youtube.
 We have not put music over the scene, which is not effective. The music is a important part in creating tension within a scene, because as the music builds the situation and shot represent this. For our own opening sequence we will use music and add foley into our scene's to create the tension and atmosphere that we want to create within our thriller.

This is the real video that we did the shot for shot remake;

Georgina's thoughts on the remake of 'Dexter' opening scene

When remaking the 'Dexter' opening titles, I have realised that sometimes things that don't look to difficult, can have complications and faults. For example the opening sequence is manly all extreme or close up shots, which is not as easy to capture without a macro lens or a good quality camera lens. So I had to come further away from the image to insure the pictures were still in focus, which means the shot for shot remake is slightly different as you can see more background area. Also I had to shoot the whole remake myself as my team member was unable to attend the shot, this created a task it itself trying to position the shot, directer and also be the camera person which is very difficult to do all at the same time. It did teach me a valuable lesson though to be more organized at to have made sure my team member was able to attend. A positive to this was that It forced me to work by myself which helped me to gain more skills in each area. I'm pleased with the outcome of my final remake, I fell the titles could have been produced better with more time to make them look more like the original but I was not incharge of this, my team mate was. I would have just personally taken more time to make them look more like the original. I think the edititing looks effective I included many jump cuts and did not let each shot drag on for longer than needed.
  Overall I am pleased I produced this piece of work as I am know more propared for what to acspect when we come to recored and edit our final opening titles and sequence.

Here are 9 frames from my own 'Dexter' opening sequence :

Location Shots for remake of Parity

We Chose these Toilets due to them looking very similar to the toilets in the original sequence, also they are very quiet meaning we wouldn't be interrupted during filming.

Parity Location Research

We were thinking about doing our parity Scene in the school toilets but there is not enough space, as well as them being very busy and we wont get a chance to get them when they are empty, so we decided to use the goals toilets next door to the school, we asked at reception for permission and they said it will be fine if we do it around 6pm so there are less customers within the building. Here is a few shots of the toilets we will be using.

Remake shot for shot of the opening titles 'DEXTER'

James' Thriller Film Scenario

9 Frame Analysis on 'Shutter Island'

The opening titles of Shutter island begin with very tense screaching music to put you on the edge of your seat. The first shot shows a boat slowly becoming visable through the mist, then it quickly cuts to leonardo being sick in the boat toilets telling us that he isnt used to the sea life and is more compfortable on land. He then walks onto the deck and meets his new police detective partner, they both introduce themselvs and give some personal details such as name and where they are from letting us get to know the characters a but more. They then go on to speak about where the boat is going, they say its going to a mental asylum for the criminally insane which gives the audience the feeling that this place will not be a bright coloured happy place it will be a bin full of all the criminally insane scum from around the world. the captain of the boat comes over and says he would appreciate it if they will get off the boat quickly so they can leave, leonardo reacts "whys that captain" and the captain says "there is a storm coming and once your on that island there aint no getting off it till the storm calms down" letting the audience know that once they get on the island they are stuck there. Once they are on the island all of the gaurds seem to be on edge, gripping there guns tightly almost as if leonardo is to be feared, but obviously if you watch the film to the end you realise they fear him as he is an inmate having a test to see if they can turn him sane. The opening 5 minutes introduces the key thriller characters to be very professional in what they do also they dont like authority over them as shown when the gaurds of the asylum tell them what to do, they protest they have more power. The opening of the film relates to the end of the film by the sea being the only way on or off the island, and also lots of small things happen like on the boat he loses his cigarettes and maybe he never had any, and his police partner finds it really hard to get his gun off his trousers waistline showing he hasnt much experience in it, and if you have seen the film to the end you know he is an actor

In this still it shows leonardo meeting his new police partner that he is going to be working with throughout the film to solve the case in hand, this is a very important still as the audience get introduced to the main thriller characters and also get filled in on the story background of shutter island.
In this still it shows leonardo and his partner meeting the main therapist of the island and this is a very important still as it shows the officors making a friendship bond with the main therapist who is a main character due to it being a mental asylum.
This is another very important still as it is when they meet one of the main doctors of the island and he does a synopsis on what kind of man leonardo is and the violent man he describes sounds nothing like the character we have seen of so far which causes tension making you wonder about his past and future.
In this still they interview some of the patients to find out some information on there case and one of the patients that they interview hand over a note telling them to "RUN" giving the audience the feeling that shutter island isnt the place that it seems to be.
In this still both of the officors get stuck in a abandoned cemetery together whilst the storm is going on outside and they start talking about there back stories and you learn more about the characters then you thought were to them. Leonardos Partner also starts thinking up ideas that the government have them trapped on the island but as a professional he brushes them thoughts aside. this makes all different thoughts go through the audiences minds to almost confuse them and so they dont know who to beleive
In this still Leonardo finds a cave and inside is a women claiming to be on the run from all of the gaurds from shutter island as they are going to cut her skull open and make her into a vegetable. She also hints to him that his partner isnt actually his partner he is working for the asylum as a spy. this makes the audience feel on edge anymore scenes that his partner is in shot.
In this still Leonardo confronts the main therapist and he finds out that everything he has been doing has been roleplay to see if they let him live out his fantasy of him being a police officer will it bring him back to sanity. by doing this they bring him back to sanity and the effects seem to be very posetive.
The effects of the treatment dont seem to last long as in the next still he is talking about a plot to escape the island, but he then says "is it better to be a monster alive or a hero dead?",  this shows that he has acknowledged the bad things he has done in the past and leave the audience on a cliffhanger wondering if he is insane or sane and would rather die than live with what he has done.

Audience expectations of a thriller

There are many elements to a thriller the audience would expect to find within the film. People watch thrillers to receive a sense of mystery and suspense, therefore it is important they understand the concept within a thriller film. Within a thriller film, you should be expected to see the following:

  • death; murder or natural
  • stereotyped characters; villain and hero? or the stereotypical gang men
  • some sense of romance
  • mystery allowing the audience to think about what they may be watching
  • location; dark nighttime scenes
  • low key lighting/ shadows to give the audience less image creating mystery and suspense
  • murder weapon
  • eerie elements within the scene
When watching a thriller you will not find any supernatural beings; ghosts, zombies, devil, witch etc, as this genre is classified as a Horror, not thriller. Also, you will not find any scientific elements such as aliens or UFO's as this relates to the genre sci-fi. There are also no intended comedy aspects as this again is not a thriller, it is a comedy. There will not be any 'girl' elements of a 'chick' flick, as again this will not fit with the genre.

Thriller Soundtrack/ sounds research

Thriller soundtrack research task: Tahnee Research

I have recently carried out a research task, whereby I researched the expected sounds you would find within a Thriller movie. I used some class peer's to demonstrate what the sounding effects may be like; for example scream, footsteps, creeping doors etc. I then surveyed a couple of people and asked them what sounds they would expect to see within a thriller and why. Please watch the attached video to view my research task. Then I found the soundtracks to 5 thriller films and have linked the youtube web addresses below:

Fight club opening track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EOb7lcto0k

Composition Expert

Rule of thirds- James research
The basic Principals behind the rule of thirds is to visualize breaking down an image into thirds (both vertically and horizontally) so this gives you 9 slots like the example below;

The theory is that if you place points of interest in the slots then it makes the shot look a lot more appealing as none of the slots are empty, because if they were then the shot would look out of place and dull in certain slots. It just makes sure that the things that you want to capture the viewers eye is on eye level for example;

Here the eyes are on the top line for primary interest and the tie and flowers and of secondary interest and they are on the lower line.
